Sequential Monadic Testing

A study where a respondent is exposed to different treatments at different times (i.e., repeated measures).

All multiple response questions and batteries can be viewed as applications of sequential monadic testing, but typically the term is used when employed as a part of an experiment (e.g., a concept test or sensory research).

There are three common implementations of sequential monadic testing:

• All respondents see the same treatments in the same order.
• All respondents see a random selection of treatments in a random order.
• A small number of alternative orderings of treatments are designed according to an experimental design (e.g., ABC, CBA, BAC), and respondents are assigned to one of these blocks.
