A question that permits a respondent to provide an answer without forcing them to choose from a pre-specified list of options. Typically, open-ended questions will either:
- Provide no practical constraint to the nature of the answer (e.g., present respondents with a text box into which they can type any answer).
- Require the respondent to provide a numeric answer, which may be further constrained to whole numbers and/or to numbers in a pre-specified range.
